Mayor's Note (Aug. 2020)
Many of us have been lucky enough to get out and enjoy our many City parks, greenways, and trails this summer. Personally, my favorite activity is to stroll along the Tualatin River Greenway Trail; however, I often see people playing pickleball at Community Park and picnicking over at Jurgen’s Park.
Have you ever wondered how these areas came to be? It’s fair to say it didn’t look this way when the mastodons were here. Maybe you have wanted the opportunity to share your thoughts on how to make a park better. Well, you are in luck, the Parks and Recreation Department has several upcoming planning projects this year and is looking for your involvement.
I am proud of the way our Parks and Recreation Department is working toward the City Council’s 2030 vision to be an engaged and inclusive community. Just recently, they completed the conceptual plan for a Veterans Memorial, a project near and dear to my heart. Through this process, we connected with over 900 community members and a stakeholder advisory committee to identify ideas and concepts that will guide the memorial design. The result is a concept plan and a preferred site location: the Tualatin Commons.
The department is moving forward with two more projects that will shape our parks for years to come. The first, Reimagina el Parkque Stoneridge Park Redesign, has already begun and will culminate with a plan for a brand new park that better serves the neighborhood.

The second project will start this winter as we begin putting together a park plan for Basalt Creek to ensure we can provide parks and recreation services to this newly developing area. We’ll need a lot of input from the community on this and I strongly encourage you to be involved! Information will start to be posted on the website later this fall and winter, so I encourage you to check back in.
