Mayor's Note (March 2021)

Mayor Bubenik

Over Valentine's Day weekend, we experienced a historic snow and ice storm in Tualatin and much of the metro area. Our eastern and southern neighborhoods were especially hard-hit by the weather and resulting damage to trees, power lines, and property. I am, once again, awed by the work of our staff and the compassion of our community. To explain what I mean by that, here are a few examples.

Example 1: Our Staff

Beginning on February 11, city staff began implementing the Snow and Ice Response Plan by applying de-icer, sand, and plowing streets. They worked throughout that weekend - and since - to remove debris and other hazards from our roadways. Over a third of our staff assisted with the storm response in some capacity, whether by fielding questions, clearing debris, assessing conditions, or purchasing additional supplies. And that doesn't even begin to cover it.

Example 2: Volunteers

One of the strategies employed was to open four drop-off sites for tree debris. Over the 4.5 days these sites were open, hundreds of cars dropped off load-after-load. This effort was possible because of the time and energy of over sixty volunteers, including many from Tualatin's Community Emergency Response Teams (CERT). With their help, we were able to make a ton of progress within a few short days.

Example 3: Community Spirit

I heard countless stories of neighbors helping neighbors to clear and haul debris to one of the drop-off sites, or otherwise share resources during this challenging time. I also received feedback and compliments on the City's response. Thank you, everyone, for your generosity, compassion, and patience.
