City Council Tours Bond-Funded Traffic Improvements
On August 8, Tualatin City Council members climbed “back on the bus” to tour transportation improvement projects citywide that are designed to relieve congestion, improve neighborhood traffic safety, and provide safe access to schools and parks.
The transportation projects were among the 34 funded to date by the $20 million bond program approved by Tualatin voters in 2018, called Tualatin Moving Forward. Of those, 22 projects are already built and another 12 are underway. All projects are scheduled to be completed in 2023—just 5 years after bond approval by voters. City Council members pointed out progress they had observed while walking, biking or driving. “It seems like a wonderful success,” noted Council President Nancy Grimes. Councilor Maria Reyes also said she takes pride in the work completed: “We’ve finished so many projects.”
The first City Council bus tour was in August 2019, but owing to the pandemic the field trips moved online in 2020 and 2021. Several new Council members were on-board this time for their first in-person tour.
The 2022 tour covered eight stops across all parts of Tualatin. The chief tour guide was Mike McCarthy, P.E., Tualatin Moving Forward program director and principal transportation engineer, who showed the Council projects that were already completed, those currently under construction, and others planned for the project’s final year.
Mayor Frank Bubenik found few surprises: “We get a quarterly update from Mike and he keeps us up-to-date. But there’s nothing like seeing these projects first-hand.” Driving through the completed Garden Corner Curves project, the Mayor pronounced it “cool”.
