Meet Tualatin Moving Forward Team Member Kristen Ballou, PE
Behind the scenes, changes to our streets get done only with careful oversight from project managers. The project manager navigates everything from designing sidewalks to be safe for people who use wheelchairs, to avoiding conflicts with gas lines, to preserving trees - all while getting the best value for the public and keeping the project on schedule.
Tualatin has been lucky to have Kristen Ballou, P.E. as the engineering project manager for several projects funded by the $20 million voter-approved transportation bond program - Tualatin Moving Forward.
The biggest project Kristen is managing in Tualatin is the Boones Ferry Road Corridor Project. This project will complete continuous sidewalks and bike lanes along Boones Ferry Road from Tualatin-Sherwood Road to Norwood Road to make it easier and safer to walk and bike. Construction is just getting underway and will be completed in 2023.
Another project Kristen is just wrapping up: traffic safety improvements at 95th Avenue and Avery Street, near Tualatin Elementary School. “This has been an exciting project to work on”, Kristen reports. The goal was to work with the school administration, parents and neighbors on effective methods to provide safe routes to the school: with new crossing signals, sidewalks and other safety improvements. Construction will be completed soon. Kristen also managed improvements at the Martinazzi/Sagert intersection, completed earlier this year.
With the Tualatin Moving Forward transportation program scheduled to conclude next year, 20 projects have been completed and another 14 are underway. “Working on this many projects has provided the opportunity for significant collaboration between projects, consultants, and the City”, says Kristen.
Kristen Ballou was born and raised in rural Washington County. She graduated in civil engineering from the University of Portland and was hired by Otak as a summer intern. Now, she has been at Otak, a local engineering firm, for 23 years. Kristen is married with two middle school students, and the family is active in hiking, biking and outdoor activities.
“With this many projects that need to be built in a short time, big ones and small ones in all parts of the city, we are fortunate to have such a great team of project managers”, says Tualatin’s Program Director Mike McCarthy, P.E.
