"Summer Makeover" Transforms Boones Ferry Road - Inside and Out
Construction is ramping up again along Boones Ferry Road. As the project’s second year gets underway, you can already see improvements strategically placed along this corridor:
- Sidewalk improvements and new segments
- Bike lane restriping
- Curb ramps
- Improved crosswalk
- Pedestrian-activated flashing beacons
The plans for 2023 include changes above and below ground:
On the roadway surface: The City is upgrading the transportation infrastructure along Boones Ferry Road from Tualatin-Sherwood Road to Sagert Street, and at the intersection of Boones Ferry with Iowa Street. Improvements will include new and better sidewalks, a center turn lane from Mohawk Street to Nasoma Lane, a crosswalk upgrade, pedestrian-activated flashing lights and curb ramps to make it safer and easier to cross. We’re also improving the bike lanes to make it easier to ride along Boones Ferry through the downtown area.
Underneath the road: We are adding a new 18-inch diameter pipe to meet peak summer demand and the community’s future water needs. The new pipe will be built to better withstand an earthquake. We are also replacing stormwater pipes and adding sumped catch basins and a stormwater swale off Sagert Street east of Boones Ferry to help remove roadway pollutants from the water before it flows into our streams.
At project completion, the roadway will be repaved to provide a fresh new surface. “This makeover project combines improvements that will help traffic flow more smoothly, and also makes travel safer for people who walk or bike. When it’s finished, this section of Boones Ferry Road will also look more appealing,” says Tualatin City Engineer Mike McCarthy, PE.
Construction is already underway at both the north and south ends of the Boones Ferry Road corridor, and will continue into fall. Expect some traffic delays as well as sidewalk and bicycle detours.
