LED Streetlight Conversion Program
Project ID:
LED Street Light Conversion Program
Project Type:
Capital Project
Project Status:
Underway
The City of Tualatin is upgrading our streetlights to more energy-efficient, dark sky friendly lights. The project, in coordination with Portland General Electric (PGE), is converting all of the City's streetlights from High-Pressure Sodium (HPS) to Light Emitting Diode (LED) lights. The project began in late 2019 and is expected to be completed by 2024.
The new lights will look and feel a bit different from the existing HPS lights. LED lights feel brighter than HPS lights due to the color temperature of the lights and the globe-less fixtures. This is especially noticeable right after the conversion takes place. Most of the time the residents get used to the new feel and enjoy the more directional light. If you have any concerns with lighting in your area let us know at the contact info below.
We will use new fixtures that look as similar as possible in design and color to the HPS lights. Any old wood poles will be upgraded to fiberglass, which lasts much longer. Physically, the LED lights should look very similar to the previous HPS ones, although they can appear a bit harsher at first.
The new LED lighting provides a variety of benefits including;
- Increased energy efficiency
- Longer useful lifespan - they burn out or fail much less frequently
- Reduce light pollution
- Provide higher-quality, directional lighting - light up the street not the sky or private properties
- Dark Sky Friendly
Help us keep the project moving smoothly
Prior to work beginning in residential areas, the City will send out a notice through the mail. This notice will provide dates the work will take place and what we need from to ensure the project goes smoothly. This typically consists of;
- Avoid parking on the street as much as possible, especially in front of street lights, during the scheduled work in your area
- Barricades and signage will be placed on the street before work starts. Please follow parking directions and avoid blocked off areas to allow access to the lights and poles.
- Removing anything you have attached to the light pole such as a mailbox, planter, address sign, etc. Items that are still attached when the pole is removed will be set near the new pole.
- COVID19 Related - Please give our crews some space. Allow at least 6 feet of distance and wear a mask if you have to walk through the project area.
