Outstanding Tualatin Volunteers: Grow / Learn / Connect
During National Volunteer Appreciation Week, April 21-28, the City of Tualatin recognizes all of our volunteers and celebrates the vital contributions of service made by individuals and groups throughout the year. In 2023, eight hundred volunteers contributed over 16,000 hours of service to strengthen the City, make significant improvements in the community, and keep Tualatin growing and thriving.
Each year, City staff nominate volunteers they have worked with over the year who have been truly outstanding. We are pleased to announce the 2023 Outstanding Volunteers of the Year:.”
Outstanding Adult Volunteer
Fernando Navarro
Fernando Navarro has been a pivotal leader in the Las Casitas neighborhood, focusing on strengthening the bond between the City and the Latino community. Fernando is a successful relationship builder, playing a crucial role in addressing the need for improved community connections. By providing guidance on effective communication strategies during the Las Casitas National Night Out, Fernando significantly improved the City's connection with the Latino community.
Fernanando’s keen ability to employ creative solutions to address challenges and enhance community participation is evident whenever he volunteers at community events like Posadas. Fernando’s volunteerism has left an indelible mark on the City of Tualatin, bringing about positive changes, fostering unity, and embodying the very essence of community service.
Outstanding Youth Volunteer
Lucy Austin
Lucy began her volunteer service for the City in 2019, as a youth volunteer in our TEAM and Tween Takeover programs. Lucy continued to volunteer during the pandemic with the Library’s Craft Prep Crew, and followed that with three more years on TEAM and the Library’s Summer Youth program.
Lucy also served on the Youth Advisory Council for two years, and has been the student representative on the Veteran’s Plaza in the beginning phase. Those of us who have worked with Lucy over the years have watched her grow from a quiet, reserved little girl into a self-possessed young woman with a bright smile and an even brighter future.
Lucy has been involved as a volunteer in our community in so many ways, it’s hard to imagine a summer or community event without her. Lucy speaks quietly and carries a big heart for service. Lucy’s consistency and commitment to volunteering will carry her far, and her success will surely follow. Thank you, Lucy, for your generous service to our City.
Outstanding Volunteer Groups
Tualatin Arts Advisory Committee and the Veteran's Plaza Service Inspired Art Committee
The Tualatin Arts Advisory Committee has been working with the Veteran’s Plaza project since 2019. The Veteran’s Plaza Service Inspired Art Committee was formed to assist in the process. These two groups worked collaboratively to develop the vision for the Veteran’s Memorial Plaza at Commons Lake Park. This project honors our veterans, and revitalizes the east side of Commons Lake Park with a fountain, new landscaping and three art installations.
The groups were tasked with listening and understanding the public process associated with the project while keeping the community goals and values in mind. 2023 was the year for big decision-making and finalization of the Plaza and artwork. Artwork was selected and details were finalized.
This group was very diverse with a wide variety of visions and views. Because of their openness and willingness to listen and learn, they were able to become a unique team. The Veteran’s Plaza will open in October of 2024. Thank you to this group of citizens for their teamwork and collaboration. Because of their work, our community will enjoy the Veteran’s Plaza for years to come.
Tualatin Library Homework Helpers
In 2022 Tualatin Library’s Homework Helpers left the building. In this case, to take their skills and passion to Bridgeport Elementary, where they could directly serve young learners who needed support after the pandemic.
In partnership with Tigard Tualatin School District, these volunteers meet weekly to help students become better readers, learn basic math and enjoy time with classmates after school.
Bridgeport found the program so impactful they have continued it through 2023 and the 2024 school year. Through the creativity and resourcefulness of volunteers the program has evolved. Homework Helpers have learned what works best, formed friendships and gotten to know these young learners through meaningful engagement and mutual learning. Volunteers bring games and activities, share snacks, stories and engage in cultural exchange while inspiring each child to learn, grow and connect.
On behalf of the City Council, City staff, and the entire Tualatin community, we thank all our volunteers for making Tualatin a great place to live, work, and play.
