Statement on the Chauvin Trial
April 20, 2021
We here at the City of Tualatin agree with and fully support the jury verdict announced today in the trial of Derek Chauvin for the death of Mr. George Floyd. We condemn the tactics and actions demonstrated in Minneapolis last year and are wholeheartedly committed to protecting life, improving equitable outcomes, and enhancing trust and safety within our community. The actions of Derek Chauvin do not reflect the value of the sanctity of life or the code of ethics the individuals in our Police Department have sworn to uphold.
Led by Mayor Frank Bubenik, with the support of the City Council, the Police Department, and the entire City organization, we signed the Reimagining Policing Pledge last summer to address police use of force policies. We spent the fall and winter engaging in a series of Community Conversations that ultimately led to a report and specific recommendations in January 2021 that we are actively working toward.
We reaffirm our united commitment to maintaining and strengthening the trust of our community.
