Code Compliance and Enforcement

The City of Tualatin makes sure city codes and ordinances are met so Tualatin continues to be a safe and resilient city. We do this by educating and collaborating with citizens, neighborhoods, businesses and other City of Tualatin departments.

Code Enforcement

The Code Compliance Officer (CCO) works in the Community Development Department – Building Division and assists with operational support, various code enforcement duties (sometimes partnering with the Community Services Officer in the Police Department), and citizen-reported issues.  The CCO investigates Tualatin Municipal Code and Tualatin Development Code violations by making onsite visits, locating responsible parties, researching applicable codes, and taking the appropriate action.  It is the CCO's primary goal to gain voluntary code compliance through conversation and cooperation.  Although official letters to violators, citations, and court appearances may be necessary.  The CCO often addresses neighborhood issues with residents, provides solutions, offers referrals to additional resources, or uses creative problem solving resolutions.

The City of Tualatin hopes to enhance neighborhoods, businesses, and their citizens' health, safety and general welfare through efficient and effective enforcement of the Tualatin Municipal and Development Codes.  All actions of the Code Compliance Officer will be conducted in a responsive and fair manner, focusing on customer service and public awareness, while respecting the rights of our residents and their property.

Code Compliance

Many residents do not want to be "that neighbor" who calls to report a problem or potential code violation. However, if the potential code violation is not reported, it may not be addressed or corrected.  Many times, the owner of the property that has a potential violation is not aware and simple education of code regulations can quickly resolve the issue. If you do not feel comfortable talking with your neighbor, you may contact the Code Compliance Officer who will look into the complaint and see what remedies can be made. Some code compliance issues can be resolved quickly, while others may take longer to correct.  Click here to report a possible code violation online.
