Proper Disposal of Hazardous Waste
Many household products you use in your yard and home can hurt people, fish and wildlife if used or disposed of incorrectly. You may be surprised at the products in your home that have the words "warning" and "caution" or even "poison" on the label. You should never dispose of your household toxic trash down the sink, on the ground, down a storm drain or in your garbage can.
Take household hazardous waste to a Metro facility for free:
Metro Central household hazardous waste
- 6161 NW Front Ave., Portland, OR, 97209
- Open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Saturday
Metro South household hazardous waste
- 2001 Washington St., Oregon City, OR, 97045
- Open 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. daily
Visit oregonmetro.gov/hazardouswaste for information on preparing materials for safe transport and disposal. Call Metro at 503-234-3000 to find other drop-off options and collection events.*
*Events can have long wait times, please consider using Metro’s household hazardous waste facilities if possible.
Or, use Metro's "Find A Recycler" page to see where to take specific items, such as:
- paints and stains
- pool and spa chemicals
- pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers and poisons
- motor oil, antifreeze and other automotive fluids
- thinners and solvents
- household cleaners and disinfectants
- batteries
- art and hobby chemicals
- aerosol spray products
- sharps (medical syringes)
- propane tanks or bottles from barbecue grills
- compact fluorescent light bulbs or CFLs, fluorescent tubes and ballasts (up to 12 tubes will be accepted at neighborhood collection events)
- mercury containing items such as thermometers and thermostats
If you are taking your household hazardous waste to Metro’s facilities or to a neighborhood collection roundup, these materials must be prepared and transported properly. This will minimize risks to you, your family, property, from accidental spills or dangerous mixing of materials
