Library History

Tualatin Public Library original location

In 1976, Washington County asked voters to approve the first countywide funding measure to support public library access for all residents. At the time, over half the population of Washington County did not have free, public library access. The first countywide levy provided funding to allow the six cities with public libraries to freely open their doors to any county resident.

In November 2017 the Tualatin Public Library celebrated its 40 year anniversary. In 1977 Tualatin Public Library joined the cooperative. In November of that same year, the library moved into Community Park's Manlove house, which now houses the city's Parks & Recreation Department.

This location served the community well (1977-85) until its walls began to almost burst with books. While the house was busy establishing itself as our first official library, the faithful movers and shakers of the town's book world stayed focused on its growth and our future needs.

And so it was that in 1985 the library moved from the 1000 square foot house to a brand new 8,455 square foot accommodations.

Over twenty years later, it was time to expand once again. The $9.1 million library expansion project more than doubled the old library space at 22,162 square feet.
