Oil spill into wetland off 90th Avenue
12/8/2021
On Monday morning, December 6, the City was notified by Clean Water Services of an oil spill in the City-owned wetland area off 90th Avenue (see map). The source of the oil spill was identified as a privately-owned truck. Oil stopped flowing from the source by Monday afternoon.
Tualatin Valley Fire & Rescue was also notified on Monday morning and began placing booms (temporary floating barriers used to contain oil spills, protect the environment, and assist in recovery) on the east and west sides of the wetland area to stop the spread of the oil.
The City is working with US Ecology, a hazardous waste treatment and disposal company, to clean up the oil in the wetland area. Clean-up began on Monday afternoon and included setting absorbent booms at the mouth of Hedges Creek, the Tualatin River, and several other storm system entry points to prevent oil from seeping into waterways.
The Oregon Department of Environmental Quality and the Oregon Department of Fish & Wildlife have been notified of the spill and may be on site for further evaluation and assistance.
Clean-up is expected to take at least one week.
For health and safety, please keep people and animals away from the area.
