Frequently Asked Questions
Q. How do I sign up?
- Call Republic Services directly (503-981-1278) and they will deliver the purple, lidded bin to your home after signing up.
Q. How much does it cost?
- Customers who sign up will see an additional $2.50 base fee on their monthly bill. Each time a customer schedules pickup, they will see an additional pickup charge.
- Curbside pickup: $9.25
- Non-curbside pickup, 5-150 feet from curb: $11.70
- Non-curbside pickup, more than 150 feet from curb: $13.02
- If you qualify as a person with a disability as identified by Oregon state law and do not share a household with an individual capable of placing your container curbside, you can request non-curbside pickup at no extra charge.
- Consider splitting the cost with neighbors and share the service. Customers can cancel Recycle+ service at any time; no contract is required.
Q. When are Recycle+ pickups?
- Recycle+ is an on-call service, so customers schedule pickups as needed, at least two business days before collection day (which are available twice per month). Frequency is up to the customer as needed/desired.
Q. What if I can't or don't want to sign up for Recycle+ but still have hard-to-recycle items?
- For customers who can't or don't want to sign up for Recycle+, dropping materials off at a recycling depot remains a no-cost recycling option for all community members. Find details at Metro’s Recycling Information Center at 503-234-3000 or use the Find A Recycler website to learn where you can drop off materials for reuse and recycling.
Q. My Recycle+ materials weren’t picked up, what should I do?
- Make certain the materials are prepared properly and fit inside the bin with the lid tightly closed. If your materials aren’t being picked-up, please call Republic Services (503-981-1278).
Q. What happens to Recyle+ Materials?
- Recycle+ materials are handled by local, private facilities that work with a variety of end markets. These markets, like most markets for recyclable scrap commodities, are variable and may change over time. Currently:
- Stretchy plastic bags and film are shipped to a company that uses the materials to manufacture outdoor products such as composite decking, playground equipment and benches. Currently, the primary company receiving Recycle+ plastic film is TREX.
- Clear plastic #1 clamshell containers are delivered to a recycling processing facility and, in coordination with D6inc, the PET thermoform, clamshell containers are recycled into new PET plastic packaging.*
- Textiles are sent to Pioneer Wiping Cloth, a local company that recycles/downcycles textiles into wiping cloths and rags.
- Compact fluorescent lightbulbs are sent to processors who are vetted and have received third party certification such as through R2, RIOS and/or e-stewards.
Q. I have more questions, who do I ask?
- Check out these FAQs, see Washington County's website, and/or call Republic Services (503-981-1278).
