Residential Organics (Curbside Composting)
Información en español - Por favor haga clic aquí
The Tualatin Curbside Composting Pilot Program is happening now!
What is curbside composting (also known as residential organics)?
- Just like the name suggests, you can put food waste into your yard debris bin. Many of our neighboring cities already include this service, so we are excited to offer the opportunity to compost curbside in Tualatin.
Are all households eligible to put food in their yard debris bins?
- Tualatin residents who live in single-family, duplex, triplex, or fourplex homes will be able to include food scraps in their green yard debris curbside carts (if you have a green yard cart and receive a bill directly from Republic Services, your cart is eligible).
- Unfortunately, apartments and other multifamily households are not eligible at this time, but we hope to be able to offer this service in the future.
Do I have to put food in my yard cart?
- Nope, including food in the yard debris bin is optional. While you don't have to compost, we hope you will consider it! Nearly 30% of residential garbage coming from the region is organic material that can be composted. Composting not only creates a nutrient-rich natural fertilizer, but helps prevent methane emissions that occur when food breaks down in the landfill - and important consideration for climate action - (did you know we have a plan for that?).
Am I being charged extra for this service? Will my pick-ups change?
- Nope! Tualatin customers won't be charged until January 1, 2025 and pick-ups WILL NOT change! All bins (garbage, recycling, and yard debris, plus glass recycling) will continue to be collected weekly (or at your current service level) .
I own a business, can we include food in our bins?
- Businesses in Tualatin that generate certain amounts of food waste are (or will be) required to participate in the business food scraps program. Learn more HERE.
- If your business is not considered a "food generating" business, but still wants to participate, please contact Republic Services.
What can go in and what should I keep out?

- BPI-certified bags are allowable, but strongly not preferred.
