Tualatin Deploying Medication on Patrol to Combat Drug Overdoses

Tualatin Police Department

The Tualatin Police Department is deploying a medication called naloxone, brand named “Narcan”, into each of its patrol vehicles.  This medication can be administered nasally by officers to aid in the effort to drastically increase the survival rate of someone having an opioid overdose from drugs such as heroin and fentanyl.  Law enforcement officers are often the first to arrive to overdose incidents where mere minutes can mean the difference between life or death for the patient.

The Oregon-Idaho High Intensity Drug Trafficking Area (HIDTA) program provided grant funding for kits of naloxone.  Metro West Ambulance supplied additional kits, and has also committed to replacing kits that are administered or expired.

Certified instructors provided specialized training to our officers carrying the naloxone kits in their patrol vehicles and agency policy was developed pertaining to its application and maintenance.

It is the goal of Tualatin Police Department and surrounding law enforcement agencies to raise awareness about the opioid crisis.  For a better understanding of the risks, addiction support and resources visit Anyone PDX Tri-County Opioid Safety Coalition.
