Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation Planned in Tualatin
On September 29, 2015 from 6:00 pm to 8:00 pm, Tualatin Police Officers will be conducting a Pedestrian Safety Enforcement Operation at crosswalks in the area of SW Boones Ferry Road and SW Siletz, in Tualatin.
The primary focus of this detail is to raise awareness of the pedestrian safety issues and to reduce the number of auto/pedestrian crashes within the city of Tualatin.
Oregon law requires that drivers stop and remain stopped for pedestrians when pedestrians are:
In the lane in which the driver’s vehicle is traveling;
In a lane adjacent to the lane in which the driver’s vehicle is traveling;
In the lane into which the driver’s vehicle is turning;
In a lane adjacent to the lane in which the driver’s vehicle is turning;
Less than six feet from the lane into which the driver’s vehicle is turning.
Officers will be stopping vehicles that fail to comply with Oregon law regarding pedestrians within crosswalks and any other traffic violations that they witness. During the time that the vehicle is stopped, the officer will be providing drivers with information regarding their responsibilities as a driver as it relates to pedestrians which may include a citation being issued.
Pedestrians are encouraged to utilize marked crosswalks, cross only with applicable signals, and be extremely vigilant of the traffic around them.
